Case study:

AstraZeneca, Da Vinci

Da Vinci is AstraZeneca’s temporary home in Cambridge; a pilot building being used by its 400 office based staff until its new global research centre and corporate HQ at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus opens in 2018/2019.

The £4m project, designed and delivered by Space Invader Design Ltd, is a test bed for fully mobile working and will inform the brief for the permanent HQ.

“Space Invader’s involvement has been a crucial component to the scheme’s success. Under very tight program and budget constraints they quickly understood the key drivers for the project which have helped us deliver a world class activity based workplace that has defined the company’s global workplace philosophy.”

— Steve Ashton, Head of Workplace, AZ Global Real Estate

The design brief for Da Vinci was clear – to create a supportive and intuitive interior that responds to the fact that today’s workforce are experiencing a revolution in communication technology that has enabled greater flexibility in how and where they carry out work activities.

Flexible environments, inspired by the scientific nature of the business, provide AstraZeneca with an opportunity to ‘try out’ a completely new way of working. Employees no-longer have allocated workstations and floorplates are broken up into activity based workspaces, large collaborative zones and quiet, reflective areas for focused work. In addition, ‘neighbourhoods’ have been created allowing whole teams to ebb and flow into one another, while still giving them the flexibility to grow or contract over time. Social zones feature large kitchen tables where employees can go to have a chat, while telephone booths and 1-2-1 pods provide private spaces for a phone call or small meeting.
