Case study:

Churchgate House

SpaceInvader was appointed to redesign of the ground floor reception and lobby areas at Churchgate House, Manchester.

The commission was undertaken for Helical Bar plc who acquired Churchgate House and its interlinking neighbour, Lee House in March 2014.

The space is not only beautiful, but provides a real opportunity to make use of the common areas as an extension of the office.

The vision for Churchgate House was to make it relevant to today’s marketplace and address the needs of our tenants. The space that has been created is not only beautiful, but also provides a real opportunity for our occupiers to make use of the common areas during the working day as an extension of their office.

The vision for Churchgate & Lee Buildings was to make it relevant to today’s marketplace and address the needs of our tenants. The space that has been created is not only beautiful to look at, but provides a real opportunity for our occupiers to make use of the common areas during the working day as an extension of their office."

— Blanche Longley, Asset Management Executive, Helical Bar

The vision for Churchgate & Lee Buildings was to make it relevant to today’s marketplace and address the needs of tenants. A stakeholder engagement programme established that the requirement was for a larger reception area more befitting the size of the building and calibre of occupant alongside flexible, social spaces to touch down outside of the office.

The resulting scheme has opened up an unused office space to the rear of the original reception to access more natural light and create a much larger entrance hall allowing for the introduction of a café as well as informal meeting and collaboration zones.

Designed to have a 5* hotel or executive business lounge atmosphere, the neutral palette is lifted with red highlights inspired by the sandstone and terracotta exterior while the new floor coverings are evocative of fabrics manufactured by the building’s original occupier, Tootal and Broadhurst Lee Co Ltd. Four bespoke voile and bronze chandeliers were commissioned specifically for the project.
