Case study:

Hilson Moran, Manchester

At SpaceInvader we always design with well-being in mind, so working with engineering consultants Hilson Moran on the fit-out of their new office space in the Neo building was a real pleasure. The brief was to work with the WELL building standardâ„¢ and become the first office outside of London to become accredited.

From the outset, emphasis was placed on collaboration and partnership with Hilson Moran to create a design that emulated nature, was vibrant and stimulating. As a certified WELL standard consultant, and being the first office to go for accreditation in the North of England.

"The work showcases Hilson Moran's understanding and mission as a practice to deliver high quality projects that are desirable and meet the demands of the modern workplace. By ensuring our staff are in an office which showcases this ethos, we are clear advocates of this and will continue to use the office as a test bed for the WELL standardâ„¢ and other technologies." - Chris Birch, director of Hilson Moran

Bad air quality can diminish work productivity and lead to sick building syndrome (SBS). The project has included high-efficiency filters within the HVAC systems in order to filter out all outdoor air pollutants. All materials used including paint, flooring systems etc, have low to zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) content.

Ensuring good quality visual lighting design and access to daylight both improve the lighting environment. Glare can cause fatigue, visual discomfort and visual impairment, therefore affecting productivity. Blinds reduce the occurrence of glare and help us avoid this. Proximity to views and daylight offer measurable physiological benefits.

Acoustic and thermal comfort throughout the workplace present a comfortable environment to work on and therefore positively impacts productivity. The same applies for having ergonomically designed chairs and workstations, in order to offer a variety of comfortable sitting and standing positions.

Included in the office fit-out as part of the WELL accreditation, biophilia has been an intrinsic element of the design. The greenery we have created in the 'living wall', potted plants and the graphic references provide presence of natural elements within the workplace.
