Case study:

The Laundrette

SpaceInvader were approached by The Laundrette in 2016 to bring their successful restaurant & bar in Chorlton, which sits in a former Soap Opera laundrette, to their new second home on Manchester’s First Street

... and are currently working on a third home for them in another great northern city!

The new feature bar stands in the main room next to an open kitchen and clay pizza oven, creating visibility throughout and connecting the diner experience.

The restaurant seats 80 guests inside and a further 50 in the wraparound conservatory, fitted with a retractable roof and sliding windows, which will open up on most days to make the most of the Mancunian sunshine.

It was essential that we brought the key elements from Chorlton to carry through the recognisable Cocktails and Carbs brand to the city. SpaceInvader were respectful to the brand’s industrial roots and were able to translate this into an urban city environment, replacing red brick with a contemporary exposed concrete palette.

However, the concrete has been warmed with brick inspired terracotta and comfort has been instilled with honest materiality and soft lush leather upholstery to retro furniture.

Other details pay homage to the original laundrette such as the machine drum inspired mirrors, the feature mural of a woman sat, legs crossed on a washing machine and playful neon signage & artwork.

SpaceInvader helped us design our second site for The Laundrette in Manchester’s new neighbourhood, First Street. They really understood our brief, were able to retain the feeling of Chorlton’s original restaurant whilst bringing an evolution to our new city centre location. They are an absolute pleasure to work with and consistently surprise and challenge us with their creative approach.

The finishing touches are what really make this space and provide a perfect balance between the unpolished and the luxurious.

Every detail has been considered to fit with a refined, reclaimed and eclectic style which marries with The Laundrette’s brilliantly bold and instagrammable appeal.
